RE-novated jane

Spring Street is enjoying a renaissance in the current economy. Local business people Jane Henderson Kenyon and her daughter Isabelle Taylor Kenyon opened the high end consignment store known as "jane" in October of 2009 at 7 Spring Street, in Princeton, NJ. The store's positioning is to provide a resource for the community to reuse, rethink and revitalize beautiful clothing, home goods, and Princeton ephemera. The store features a carefully edited collection of goods that change every 60 days.

This past August, the store has lived up to it's theme of "RE" using items, and did it's first major renovation since it's opening last October. The store has created a whole new racking system fashioned from old wooden doors, barn wood, and bamboo. The doors and barn wood were both locally sourced from The New Jersey Barn Company. And the bamboo was selected as being manufactured in a responsible way. Plumbing pipes were utilized to form the racks that clothing will hang on.

More storage space was created and local craftsmen were employed to design and build space to hold items not yet ready for sale.

Consider the store has received over 16,000 consignments in 9 months, and 80% of those items have been sold. There are 650+ individual consignors, and the company has provided jobs for over 20 local residents. At any given time there are more than 3,000 objects for sale on display. Over 2000 items have been given away to local agencies and charities.

The store is now 100% lighted by LED lighting. While the initial expense was 5 - 10 times more expensive than the halogen lights that the store previously had, the lights are 90% more efficient than the halogen lights. They produce 94% less heat, and the quality of the light is beautiful. These lights are thought to last considerably longer than the halogen lights as well.

An exterior awning was added with the approval of the town, historic commission, and landlord. It features the distinctive logo and branding that was designed by the local award winning branding and marketing firm, Smith+Manning. Cooling costs are likely to go down based on deflecting the heat from the sun on the store windows in the afternoon.

The biggest change that customers are likely to experience is a much larger and more functional "cash wrap" or check out. Utilizing a Flemish general store island purchased in Lambertville, NJ, Peter Beck, of Home Theater Exchange, created a hip table reminiscent of country general stores, and old fashioned hardware stores. The same plumbers' pipe has been refashioned to create bars for customers to hang garments on as they scoop up bargains.

The space features a flat screen TV with the history of the store, it's associates, models, contractors, and cool items that are for sale in the store. An iPOD dock plays music and several customers have generously created music play lists for the store.

Dave Henn of THG Builders, a long-time local general contractor, oversaw the renovations.

jane's philosophy is to give back to the community and has in 10 short months provided cash and goods to Princeton Youth Achievers, Hands Together, Corner House, Home Front, Derek's Dream Dinner, and Dress For Success, amongst others.

The Grand RE-Opening is scheduled for Tuesday September 14th. Store hours are Monday - Saturday from 10 am - 6 pm. Consignments are taken each Tuesday and Thursday.
