Eden Autism Announces Their New Mascot, Edgar the Hedgehog

Eden is proud to welcome our new mascot, Edgar the Hedgehog. In honor of his arrival, here are some interesting facts about the hedgehog:

Hedgehogs Fun Facts

  • Hedgehogs got their name due to their tendency of foraging for food in hedges and undergrowth.
  • There are 17 different species of hedgehog.
  • 5,000 short, prickly spines cover a hedgehog’s entire back.
  • When threatened, hedgehogs roll into a tight ball, protecting their face, eyes, limbs and bellies. This will cause all of their spines to point outwards.
  • Most hedgehogs will attempt to escape an attacker before they roll into a protective, spiny ball.
  • A hedgehog can run over six feet per second.
  • Hedgehogs have poor eyesight, but excellent senses of smell and hearing.
  • Hedgehogs are fairly vocal and communicate through a combination of grunts and snuffles. They squeal when they are happy.
  • Hedgehogs prefer to live apart from other members of their own species.
  • The hedgehog is primarily nocturnal, and sleeps for a large portion of the daytime either under cover of brush, grass, rock or in a hole in the ground.
  • Hedgehogs are known as friends of the gardeners because they eat the pests that are harmful to the gardens, like beetles and caterpillars.
  • A group of hedgehogs is called an array.
  • Baby hedgehogs are called hoglets.
  • Our own Edgar the Hedgehog (Eden’s official mascot) stands at 5 feet  10 inches tall and is the cutest thing you will ever see.
