Meet the U.S. National Rowing Team at Palmer Square
PRINCETON, N.J. – Palmer Square will host “Meet Athletes on the Water” on Saturday, May 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the green at Palmer Square in Princeton, N.J. The event, which is free and open to the public, will give the surrounding community a chance to meet members of the U.S. National Rowing Team and learn more about the sport.
Olympic and national team athletes training for the London 2012 Olympic Games will be on-site to sign autographs, talk about how much they practice, how much they eat to keep them fueled, how people can get involved with rowing and much more. In addition, rowing machines and rowing shells will be on display.
“Our goal is to integrate rowers training here in Princeton into the community,” said 2008 Olympic gold medalist Anna Goodale. “I am always surprised at how few people are aware that there are elite athletes training in this area. The four-year road to the Olympics is long and exciting. We are looking forward to it and invite the community to be part of the journey.”
USRowing’s national team athletes train at both the Finn M.W. Caspersen Rowing Center on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J., as well as the Princeton University Boathouse on Lake Carnegie on Princeton University’s campus. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the U.S. won gold in the women’s eight, silver in the women’s single sculls and bronze in the men’s eight. Last year, the U.S. won seven medals at the 2009 World Championships in Poznan, Poland.
